If we can create a societal structure that values people in all of their intricacies and provides resources and education about prevention for abuse, substance abuse, neglect, and more then we can begin moving toward a healthier and happier society.
Think about your role as a caregiver, administrator, or trainer and what that entails. Your interactions with children and the people who care for children has great potential and can be harnessed to promote a positive trauma-informed practice.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has outlined the four core concepts that make up a trauma informed approach to learning and care.
The four concepts are:
“A program, organization, or system that is trauma-informed:
“A program, organization, or system that is trauma-informed:
- Realizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for recovery;
- Recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, families, staff, and others involved with the system;
- Responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and
- Seeks to actively resist re-traumatization."
