Nature Tummy Time

Age Group: 

• Infant

Objectives:

• Student will develop gross motor skills

CDA Competency Standard: II.4.4b

• Candidate’s facilitation promotes children’s physical development
  b) Guides the development of children’s fine and gross motor skills

Materials: 

• Blanket
• Natural items:
  • Pinecones
  • Large, smooth stones
  • Various leaves

Procedure: 

1. Give the infant tummy time outside in the shade on a blanket spread over a flat grassy area. Place the child near the edge of the blanket so they can view and reach the grass and other natural items.
2. Closely watch the child to make sure that they are safe and allow them to explore the sights, sounds, and textures of nature during tummy time.

Assessment: 

• Observe and record the student’s gross-motor skills. Were they able to hold their head for longer periods of time? Did they move their head to look around?
